Tip of the Week: How to Identify and Avoid Package Delivery Scams

It’s that time of the year (yes… already!) when shoppers around the world begin ordering gifts for holiday celebrations. But beware, delivery scams and package theft become more prevalent during the holiday season.

Delivery scams can start as a text message or email about delivering a package to your address with a “tracking link” that you are urged to click on to update your delivery or payment preferences. You may also receive a voicemail message with a callback number or even a “missed delivery” tag on your door with a number to call. While these messages often look or sound legitimate, you should never click a link, open an attachment, or call back a number from an unexpected delivery notice. Contact the delivery service or seller directly using a verified number or website.

Here are some additional warning signs of package delivery scams:

  • Unexpected requests for money in return for delivery of a package, often with a sense of urgency.
  • Requests for additional personal and/or financial information.
  • Links to misspelled or slightly altered website addresses, such as “fedx.com” or “fed-ex.com.”
  • Spelling and grammatical errors or excessive use of capitalization and exclamation points.
  • Lack of the padlock symbol and HTTPS in a URL.

Scammers are often very clever and will go to great lengths to deceive you. Be suspicious of any unexpected package delivery notice and report them to your security team.

If you have any questions regarding this tip, please contact Information Security via Mark.Nagiel@SupremeLending.com. Thanks for participating in the information security effort!

Meet Ben Kaiser, Information Security Analyst

  • Hometown: I am from a small town called Grass Lake, Michigan. How small you might ask? We only have 3 stop lights in the entire township.
  • First Job: My first job was at a McDonald’s when I was in high school. I started in the kitchen and worked into a leadership position before graduating university.
  • History With Supreme: My history with Supreme is rather interesting. I was originally working for AMEC before Supreme acquired the company back in 2020. I was placed with the Service Desk, then transitioned to security shortly after. I relocated to Texas from Michigan and have been here ever since.
  • Favorite Thing About Supreme: I enjoy the sincere appreciation I receive from not only management, but also the people I work with every day.
  • Fun Fact People May Not Know: I compete in a video game called Super Smash Bros. Melee for the Nintendo GameCube. I have traveled across the country to attend tournaments and still actively play despite the game being 21 years old.
  • How to Turn a Bad Into a Good One: I’ve found baking to be an incredible stress reliever.
  • Favorite Vacation Destination: I absolutely love Michigan during fall. The weather is perfect, the colors are stunning, and they have the best homemade apple cider and donuts.
  • Hobbies and Special Interests: Outside of Super Smash Bros. Melee, I also enjoy chess, tennis, and am always down for a round of euchre.
  • Favorite TV Show: Despite the dud final season, Game of Thrones is my favorite TV show as the interconnective storyline was very engaging.
  • Favorite Holiday: Thanksgiving! What could be better than an entire holiday that revolves around food?’

Reminder: Employee Surveys for Best Mortgage Companies to Work For

On Friday, October 21, the Best Companies Group sent surveys to a random sample of 350 Supreme team members—including Branch and Corporate employees—as part of the 2023 Best Mortgage Companies to Work For program by National Mortgage News.

We recognize that individually and as a company we have faced several challenges this year, not just at Supreme but the mortgage industry at large. While the timing of this survey may not be ideal, we are still taking this opportunity to participate in this contest as another means to gather employee feedback and identify areas of improvement.

If you received a survey, please take 10-15 minutes to complete it by Friday, November 4. Your honest feedback is extremely valuable to this process and will remain anonymous. Thank you in advance for participating in the Best Mortgage Companies to Work For survey.

This Week’s Tip: The Dangers of Password Sharing

One of the best ways to protect information is to ensure that only authorized people have access to it. Passwords are the most common means of authentication but only work if they are complex and confidential. Many systems and services have been successfully breached because of non-secure and inadequate passwords. Here are four reasons why you should never share your passwords:

  • Compromises account security. Sharing passwords for any account results in the account being less secure. Giving your password to someone you trust does not mean there is nothing to worry about. They may store the password on a compromised device or an unsecure location.
  • Reused passwords. Most people use the same password to access more than one account. Sharing a reused password significantly increases the threat.
  • More privileges than needed. You may want to give someone access to your account so they can find specific data, but we must remember that they will also have access to everything else in the account, such as email or other logins.
  • Incidents will be logged as you. Any actions that the person you have granted access to will be recorded as you. In situations where the cause of an information security incident requires an investigation, sharing of credentials can make the process of determining who is responsible difficult.

If you find yourself in a situation where others may know an account password, you should change it immediately.

If someone on your team is conducting work on your behalf and they need access to your account, it is possible that the wrong access rights were assigned. In these instances, please contact the IT Service Desk and open a ticket to have the employee’s access rights be reviewed.

If you have any questions regarding this policy, please contact Information Security via Mark.Nagiel@SupremeLending.com. Thanks for participating in our team’s efforts to keep our company data safe.

Meet Don White, Bond Purchase Clearing Specialist, and His Growing Family

This special Employee Spotlight shares Don White’s inspiring foster care adoption story. Don is a Bond Purchase Clearing Specialist and has been with Supreme since 2012.

Married for 14 years, Don and his wife Quita wanted to grow their family. After dealing with infertility treatments and learning the high costs of adoption agencies, they looked into foster-to-adopt programs. With so many children in the foster care system who need loving homes, Don and his wife became licensed foster parents and began their journey. In November 2019, they took in two young siblings who needed emergency placement. Two years later, they were excited to move forward with adopting them, but one of the kid’s relatives stepped in and took custody. Devastated the adoption fell through, Don and his wife then tried match-to-adopt programs.

At an adoption fair, they met a young foster child who they had inquired about earlier but never heard back. There was an instant connection! After a couple of weekend visits, their new foster daughter moved in during May 2022, and she will be officially adopted on November 19, which happens to be National Adoption Day!

Another exciting surprise also came to light for the Whites. They received a call that the two children who they had initially fostered needed a home, and they were asked if they would be willing to take them in again. Despite the challenges and the current market, they couldn’t say no. It was like they never left! Ages 4, 6, and 11, the Whites have a full house filled with playfulness, love, and joy! Don loves the opportunity to share their story and raise awareness about the foster care program.

This Week’s Tip: When and How to Send an Encrypted Email

Email can be one of the least secure platforms out there. Every day, people freely exchange private information without regard for who might see it, or whose hands it could end up in.

You’re probably familiar with a few standard security tips, such as using strong passwords and avoiding malware. However, many people overlook the importance of using encrypted email. Here is a quick cyber security tip to learn more about when and how to encrypt an email sent from Supreme Lending.

When to Send Encrypted Email:

Email contents will automatically encrypt when containing a Social Security Number or a Credit Card Number in text form.

Important: Emails will NOT automatically encrypt when this information is part of an image.

As a best practice, always manually encrypt emails that contain sensitive information! A single wrong click can cause a data breach by exposing company secrets or customers’ personally identifiable information (PII).

How to Send Encrypted Email:

To send a secure email, enter one of the following words into the Subject: [secure] or [encrypt].

Important: You must include the square brackets!

That’s it! If you have any questions regarding this tip, please contact Information Security via Mark.Nagiel@SupremeLending.com. Thanks for participating in our team’s efforts to keep our company data safe.

CRM Users: Align Loan Dates with Milestone Emails

Loan Officers, are you taking advantage of milestone emails? If you are signed up with one of our approved Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems, a great feature is milestone email marketing. Here’s an important reminder for CRM users to maximize milestone emails.

When adding dates into a consumer’s loan profile in Encompass, it is imperative that your Processor,  Loan Officer Assistant, or other members of your team are adding the exact date of when a milestone occurs, which will then trigger the respective email to deploy.

We understand borrowers and supporting real estate agents are eager for items to be completed, however, the last thing you want to happen is telling them one thing and the milestone email deploys a day or two later.

Have questions or want to learn more about Supreme’s CRMs? Contact Marketing@SupremeLending.com

This Week’s Tip: Data Entry Phishing Emails – Do Not Enter!

Cybersecurity Awareness Month is in full swing! This week’s tip covers data entry phishing emails, which remain one of the most effective ways for attackers to steal credentials and sensitive information. By using a malicious link to redirect victims to a fake login page, attackers can harvest sensitive information or credentials entered by the victim.

All too often, people give attackers exactly what they want. The good news: everyone can learn how to recognize and avoid these phishing attacks. There are several steps to take, such as always checking the spelling of URLs in emails, watching out for URL redirects, asking yourself smart questions before submitting any personal information online, and more. Read the full Tip of the Week Bulletin linked below.

Meet the Mother-Son Duo Tammy Tompkins and Trent Tompkins

  • Branch Location: The Tompkins Team is located in Cabot, Arkansas, which has been home to myself [Tammy Tompkins] and my husband, Tommy, for 22 years. My son, Trent, and his wife, Chelsea, moved back to Cabot in 2019 to raise their family. They have two children, Laura (2.5 years old) and Owen (3 months old). We primarily serve clients in the Central Arkansas area.
  • History With Supreme: I joined Supreme four years ago after working at a depository bank, where I managed the mortgage department. The bank was not able to offer the extensive products that Supreme can provide. Trent joined me at Supreme three years ago after coming from a bank in Fayetteville, AR, where he served as Business Development Officer.
  • The Tompkins Team Members: Myself and Trent make up the Tompkins Team’s Loan Officers. Gabriela Hernandez is our Loan Officer Assistant and is based in Monticello, AR. Jocelyn Tubbs is our Processor and is based in Jonesboro, AR.
ALE_2441v1
  • Branch Specialties: Most customers in our footprint need help with down payment and closing cost assistance. A majority of our area does not qualify for USDA loans due to town populations, so we do a large volume of Arkansas Development Financing Authority (ADFA) bond loans. We were ranked #2 in the state for bond loans in 2021. We also provide a great amount of VA loans as the Little Rock Air Force Base is in the adjacent town of Jacksonville, AR.
  • Typical Day at Your Branch: With two of us working each file, we are able to divide and conquer. We have a pipeline meeting twice a week with our Loan Officer Assistant and Processor. We have to jump track when a property hits the market to help our borrowers get qualified ASAP. Our market is a tough one right now and that keeps us on our toes!
  • Keys to Success: God is our base. We try to make sure everything we do in our business honors Him. We work diligently at staying in front of real estate agents, are very involved in community events, and love the participation. Communication with our clients and serving others is the key!
  • Fun Facts: We are a Mother-Son Team and have fun working together! Tammy serves on the NPBOR Directors Board, serving many terms as Affiliate Director; Arkansas Southern Baptist Convention Board of Directors; Cabot Christmas Alliance Board; Housing Education and Learning Program (HELP) Board; and Arkansas Development Finance Administration Board. Trent serves the Board of the Joint Community Real Estate Council as the Affiliate Director and has been nominated to the Cabot Chamber of Commerce Board.
  • Favorite Thing About Working at Supreme: Our company’s leadership is key—from the top with Scott Everett himself to everyone at Corporate. Their desire to help is fantastic! Our Regional Manager Tiffany Fisher is a fabulous, caring, and involved leader. We all function as a family in our Region to help anyone with anything they need assistance with to grow their business. We are truly blessed!
